SAN ANTONIO- The armed services YMCA is planning to open a new facility at the Brooke Army Medical Center, bringing their support services to Fort Sam Houston.ASYMCA is the oldest continuously serving non-profit that supports the military and veterans. They are currently set up in 94 bases across the us and are expanding their reach to San Antonio.Childcare, drop off care at hospitals, opportunities for active-duty members to go home for the holidays, and food distributions are just some of the services they provide all either free or at low cost.While they are one of many associations within YMCA, majority of their services are for supporting military families. William French, President, and CEO says the organization saw the need for their services at Fort Sam Houston because of how many military families, particularly junior enlisted families there are.They will start with free drop off care and create more opportunities to expand and do more of their programs across the city. The goal is to help the young military families get started on the right track, so they’ll be successful throughout their career."What we try to do is provide opportunities, particularly for childcare. We think if we can get child affordable and quality childcare for those military members, family members, particularly the spouses, they can go get the skills they need to go get a job," said French.There is no membership fee for people who want to take advantage of the ASYMCA services. This way, the organization can provide the support they need to be successful living their lives in the military.The armed services YMCA is expecting to open their facility later this month so they can get the ball rolling on providing for military members and their families.
