I would like to expand on one experience I had recently while visiting Paris. In the planning stages of our trip Mrs. Gorodish expressed a desire to see the opera. I had never been to the opera, but I responded, as I do to most of Mrs. Gorodish's suggestions, "what does not kill me makes me stronger." That's no joke; I figured that I might or might not enjoy it, but either way I would learn something. You can buy tickets for the Paris Opera on-line. It turned out that given the constraints of scheduling, and our desire to see a show in the grand Garnier opera house (which was half the point), our only option was to see Gluck's Alceste (which I had never heard of).Another decision to be made was whether to go for the moderately-expensive seats or the super-expensive seats. I let Mrs. Gorodish make the call, and she said go for the moderately-expensive seats.Judging that we would enjoy the show more with some familiarity, I bought a recording and spent some time listening to it. After some minutes of this, Mrs. Gorodish turned to me and asked, "Is this what we're going to see?" Yeah, it's that kind of music. There's more to say about the music later. So on the fateful day, we arrived early, and spent some time looking around the Opera house. This is something to see. The architect, Charles Garnier, worked from the principle that more is always better. The Opera house is the embodiment of magnificent excess. The story goes that when Emperor Napoleon III beheld the Opera for the first time, he asked the architect "What kind of style is this supposed to be?" Quick-thinking Garnier replied, "It is style Napoleon III, your Majesty."There's a reason why the Phantom haunts the Opera and not the stock exchange or the train station. The Opera demands a story that is grotesque and bombastic. This is not a criticism. Grotesque and bombastic is fun once in a while.Note the colossal gilded figures supporting the ceiling:I seem to be the first person to notice that Garnier was clearly inspired by the Gotham City of Schumacher's Batman movies:Eventually it came time to take our seats. Our cheap seats were on the fourth-level balcony, which was pitched at least 45 degrees. The seats were closer together than economy class on an airplane. If you have somewhat long legs, your

On October 25, the OPC Foundation released OPC .NET 3.0 (WCF), which was formerly known as OPC Express Interface (Xi). Developed as an enhancement to OPC Classic, OPC .NET 3.0 (WCF) serves to bridge the gap between Microsoft .NET and the world of OPC Classic and will also provide a common interface between newly developed .NET clients and OPC Classic servers.OPC Classic relies on the Microsoft Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) to manage distributed communications. By using the newly created OPC .NET 3.0 (WCF), developers can work with the Windows Communication Foundation technology and eliminate the headaches associated with DCOM configuration. Managed code applications developed using the OPC .NET 3.0 (WCF) interface will be able to take advantage of the included COM interop layer to easily enable communications with OPC Classic servers that are typically developed as unmanaged code applications. The use of WCF also provides an increased level of security through built-in authentication, authorization and data encryption. Additional security features have been built into the interface to enable secure authentication across HTTP or TCP. The OPC .NET Version 3.0 (WCF) is the next generation of development toolkit for the legacy OPC Classic interfaces. Whereas Version 1.0 was the automation wrapper for Visual Basic 6 development, Version 2.0 was the .NET interface containing the necessary infrastructure to convert from managed code to COM/DCOM and vice-versa; Version 3.0 now replaces DCOM completely by using the current Microsoft communications technology WCF.In the future the OPC Foundation will integrate the OPC .NET 3.0 (WCF) with OPC Unified Architecture (UA), such that client applications based on OPC .NET 3.0 will be able to access OPC UA servers.OPC .NET 3.0 (WCF) enables:• Easy access to OPC DA (Data Access), OPC HDA (Historical Data Access) and OPC A&E (Alarms and Events).• A .NET development environment• Secure, firewall-friendly

Was even asked to revise Tannhauser to suit the trend. After the fire in the Palais Royal theatre in 1763, the Opera spent time in a great many auditoriums in Paris, including the Montansier hall, at the site of the present Louvois Square, which the bishop of Paris ordered destroyed after the Duc de Berry was assassinated. The Opera set up quarters in the Salle Favart, which had been abandoned by the Opéra-Comique. It moved again pending completion of the Palais Garnier in 1874, which was part of Haussmann’s urban-development plans. This entire period was intense and full of creativity, but then the quality declined, energy was wasted on intrigues, and many singers moved on to other halls. The Palais Garnier was built between 1861 and 1875 at the orders of NapoIeon III. This building was said to best symbolise the “self-satisfaction” of the Second Empire. But it is in fact a shining example of the unity of artistic creativity. The hall was inaugurated on 5 January 1875 with an act from La Juive by Halévy and excerpts from Meyerbeer’s Huguenots. Electricity was installed in the hall and on the stage between 1881 and 1887. In 1932, the first radio broadcast of a live performance took place. The building, which was then one of Europe’s largest, had immense foyers, a library, rehearsal rooms, a school of dance, etc. In its first forty years, performances remained cautious and low-profile, as French composers practised a strict protectionist policy. Things began to change. The Data Access COM UA Proxy is a COM Server combined with a UA Client. Investigators later said a nearby electrical wire probably overheated and melted the steel cable holding up the counterweight, causing its fall. In The Phantom of the Opera book and musical, the Phantom cuts the whole chandelier loose during the curtain call of the opera Il Muto, in order to exact revenge on Christine for falling in love with Raoul instead of him. Luckily, no one in the musical dies from the crash. The Paris Opera House really has an underground lake.Yes, the Palais Garnier actually has an underground lake! In the Phantom musical and book, the lake is the centerpiece of the Phantom's lair. A feat of theatrical magic transforms the Broadway stage into the lake, on which the Phantom and Christine ride on a canoe amid the mist, as he sings the music of the night.Legend goes that a faceless man (and some fish) once lived in the lake. Leroux heard the rumor and ran with it. In reality, the lake looks more like a sewer and had a much more practical purpose: keeping well and steam pump water away while the opera house foundation was being built. The only occupants of the "lake" as of late are a single white catfish (the opera house staff's unofficial pet) and French firefighters, who practice swimming in the dark there. We wonder if they've ever heard music coming from seemingly nowhere while doing so...The Phantom is based on a real ghost story. The many legends that inspired the Phantom are shrouded in as much mystery as the character himself. One story goes that in 1873, a stage fire destroyed the Paris Opera company's old venue, the Salle Le Peletier. (That part is true.) A ballerina died and her fiancé, a pianist, was disfigured. Legend has it that he retreated to the underground of the Palais Garnier, the company's new venue, and lived there until he died. Is he the same faceless man that supposedly lived in the lake? That's uncertain, but it's clear how these legends inspired the Phantom's appearance and living situation in Leroux's book.Another rumor that inspired Leroux is the story of a ghost who haunts the Palais Garnier. Not only did the tale inspire him, but Leroux became obsessed with proving that the ghost was real. In the prologue to The Phantom of the Opera novel, he talks about the mysterious disappearance of one Vicomte de Chagny, who disappeared to Canada for 15 years without a trace. When he finally returned to Paris, he immediately went to the Palais and asked for a free opera ticket.Leroux goes on to claim that Chagny and his brother were fighting over Christine Daaé (a fictional character), insinuating that a "tragedy" happened between the

The façade features a collection of sculptures inspired by themes such as “harmony,” “instrumental music,” and “dance.” Guests can also find busts of famous composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Rossini between the columns of the front exterior.Photo: CHEUNGHYO/Getty ImagesHarbin Grand Theater (Harbin, China)The silky curves of the Harbin Grand Theater may make it look like something out of a futuristic fantasy movie, but the extraordinary building is not the product of a hopeful daydream.
